With Visio 2013, Microsoft switched the file format from VSD to VSDX. Like DOCX or XLSX, VSDX is based on XML files contained within a ZIP archive and is publicly documented. Older versions of Visio cannot open VSDX files. To open VSDX files with Visio versions prior to 2013, converting VSDX to VSD online is a good option. For Visio 2010, there is also the Visio Compatibility Pack, which adds support for VSDX and VSDM files. [1]
